I confess! At the moment, I feel more like a Tyrannosaurus Rex than a dressage rider. It has nothing to do with my age — although to some of you I’m approaching extinction — and everything to do with my arms. They’re short!

Short. Short. Short.

And no, saying it three times hasn’t changed anything. They’re still short. Sigh.

As a dressage rider, I often find myself riding with a straighter arm. Why? Partly because I’m — ahem, short — and the horse is strong. Instead of making her give to the bit, I give the bit to her. Very nice of me, huh? I’m driving her into both reins when I actually want her in the outside rein. Speaking of driving, maybe I’m trying to sit back as far as possible in case of an air bag deployment. See? Safety first.

I have to lose these Barbie doll arms. The solution? Embrace my inner dinosaur and bend those darn arms! Just look at the alignment on that Tyrannosaurus Rex! I can only hope to emulate his arms. Hey, let’s try…

Shoulders back and down…
Straighter upper arm…
Elastic elbows…
Relax fingers on the inside rein…
Aaargh!
Keep arms…short…
Push her up into the outside rein…
Keep arms…short…

Woo hoo, look mom!
No arms!
