Welcome to Vacations R Us. My name is Todd and I’ll be your trip adviser tonight. There are several specials to chose from this evening. Todd hands us several brochures. May I get you something to drink while you’re looking them over?

Ummm, I’d like a Sam Adams Summer please.
Make that two. We think a lot alike. I guess that’s why we’re married to each other.
I’ll have a root beer. Or kid beer as we call it.

Todd returns with our drinks and asks for our vacation orders.

We’d like the horseback riding vacation for three please. A Western saddle is fine. Could we have a side order of golf? Oh, and a skate / BMX park for dessert.

Tall order, huh?

We’ve actually done very well with our family vacations. The best were to Rocking Horse Ranch in New York and Black Mountain, North Carolina. Thank God for fishing, hiking and swimming, because I haven’t found any skate parks. Next order of business: large dog friendly.

Rocking Horse Ranch in NY

Rocking Horse Ranch, Highland, NY is an all inclusive year round resort that has a lot to offer families. There’s horseback riding, pony rides, water skiing, kayaks, paddle boats, fishing, tennis, indoor / outdoor pools, saunas, miniature golf, softball, volleyball, basketball, horseshoe pitching, bocce, day camp and nursery, nightly entertainment and much more. There’s a nice golf course a few miles away.

During the winter they offer skiing, ice skating, snow tubing and sleigh rides.

We went in the summer for two years in a row and made friends with families that returned on the same weekend every year.

Check out their website for more information.

Black Mountain, North Carolina was more of a family reunion. I was able to ride Harry, a sweet Tennesee Walking Horse, owned by a cousin and my husband went golfing with family members. We went hiking at Chimney Rock State Park (as seen in The Last of the Mohicans). What a beautiful view! Then we strolled around Lake Lure. Simply devine. We’d like to go back. When the time comes it may be our retirement spot.

The Mountain Top Inn & Resort, Vermont is a resort that just came to our attention. They offer guided trail rides, lessons in English or Western, introduction to cross-country jumping, kayaks, canoes, pontoon boats, swimming, clay bird shooting, hiking, mountain biking, tennis, croquet…and many beautiful golf courses are within a short drive and dogs are welcome! Check out their website for more information.

WOW! Something for me, the non-horsey husband and teenage son! With the dogs!
